Urban Sprawl to Urban Stay
All things seem to be cyclical—fashion, cars, décor, to name just three. But for decades, as cities grew and suburbs developed, what we seemed to move away from as a country were communities that were focused on walkability. Instead, the car took over, as we relegated ourselves to driving from home to school, work, shops, and more.
Ever so slowly, though, there seems to be a swing in that cycle: There are more and more communities that are using their walkable nature to attract everyone from young people just starting out to families who want to spend less time in their vehicles to retirees looking to downsize and get outside. These walkable communities enable residents to reach home, work, school, shops, and other amenities on foot or by using mass transit. To gain that, many people are willing to give up bigger homes, too.
What’s a walkable community look like and what are its advantages? This graphic explains it.
